Club history
The Torbay Athletic Club has been active since its formation after a public meeting held at the Glamorgan School on 20 November 1975. The first Club Meeting followed on Tuesday 25 November 1975 at Long Bay College and was attended by over 100 children who paid a $1.00 fee for the initial season. A full committee subsequently formed on 16 February 1976 with Mr D Goodwin as Chairman, Mr A Richards as Treasurer, and Mrs M Nichols as Secretary. At the end of the first season of the competition the inaugural Annual General Meeting on 12 April voted to affiliate to the Auckland Centre, thus completing the successful formation of the Torbay Athletic Club.
The club is very much a part of the local sporting scene and has produced some very promising athletes over the years. Emphasis, however, has always been very much on the FUN side of Athletics. Children are encouraged to improve their individual performances rather than competing just to win, (an attribute that is all too often apparent in today’s sporting world).
Parent participation has always been a feature of the Club and indeed a key factor in the successful operation of the athletic program, as well as in creating a friendly, family atmosphere. Our emphasis is on a FUN, FAMILY ORIENTATED INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETICS.
